Position Summary
Crushing Colonialism is a small, but growing Indigenous founded and operated non-profit organization (501c3) based in the so-called US that uses traditional Indigenous storytelling as a tool to honor and uplift Indigeneity. We work with Indigenous communities across borders, lands, and oceans to increase the pay and employment of Indigenous storytellers (journalists, artists, creatives) while also promoting their work, providing funding for media and arts projects, and increasing access to professional representation. Crushing Colonialism’s The Magazine is made by and for Indigenous communities across borders, lands, and oceans. It takes an Indigenous lens to worldly issues like disability justice, climate justice, women’s rights, Afro-indigeneity, and 2SLGBTQIA+. The digital version is open source and free and offers written, video, photo, and audio content.
Crushing Colonialism’s The Magazine Internship focuses on the editorial process of publishing, author support, and program management, offering a hands on experience with international advocacy. This internship is an opportunity to learn how to translate complex social issues and a diversity of background, culture, and perspective into an inclusive storytelling platform – by building practical skills in a variety of functional areas. Since Crushing Colonialism is a small non-profit, the intern will interact with core decision-makers and other departments, allowing for a personal, integrative experience with higher-visibility contributions to strategy and media outreach. This internship is best suited for a graduate student who is looking to build advocacy experience while connecting with nonprofit leaders, media contacts, and community stakeholders. Crushing Colonialism is willing to work with your university for university credit.
