Director of Development
Description
The Director of Development leads Crushing Colonialism’s fundraising strategy and revenue generation efforts. This role is responsible for cultivating donor relationships, securing grants, overseeing the grant writing process, managing the fundraising pipeline, and ensuring the organization’s long-term financial sustainability. The Director of Development works closely with the Executive Director, board of directors, and program teams in a remote, cross-border environment, engaging regularly with Indigenous, disabled, Two-Spirit, queer, and multiply marginalized communities.
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS AND ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
1.Fundraising & Revenue Generation
- Develop and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies, including grants, individual donations, and nonprofit and corporate sponsorships.
- Identify potential funding sources and opportunities to diversify revenue streams.
- Work closely with the Executive Director and board of directors to set and meet financial goals.
- Design and lead fundraising campaigns aligned with the organization’s mission and values.
2.Donor Relations & Stewardship
- Cultivate and maintain meaningful relationships with donors, ensuring they feel engaged and valued.
- Plan donor appreciation activities, including thank-you communications, personalized outreach, and impact reports.
- Manage donor databases and ensure accurate, up-to-date records of all contributions.
- Approach donor relations with cultural humility and accountability, centering community values.
3.Grant Oversight & Management
- Oversee the Grant Writer’s work, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and funder requirements.
- Review and approve grant applications before submission.
- Oversee grant reporting, ensuring full compliance with funder requirements and deadlines.
- Work with program staff to align funding opportunities with organizational needs and priorities.
- Maintain all fundraising contacts and related documents as directed by Crushing Colonialism, with regular updates for new additions or changes.
4.Financial Planning & Budgeting
- Work with the finance team to develop realistic and sustainable fundraising budgets.
- Ensure fundraising efforts align with the organization’s long-term sustainability and mission.
- Analyze fundraising data to assess effectiveness and adjust strategies as needed.
- Provide regular reports on fundraising progress and projections to the Executive Director and board.
5.Board Engagement
- Work with the board of directors and fundraising committees to leverage their networks and expertise.
- Train and support volunteers or staff involved in fundraising efforts.
- Provide regular reports on fundraising progress, goals, and strategies.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Communications, Non-Profit Management, or a related field.
Experience
Required
- 10+ years experience working with Indigenous communities and tribes
- 7+ years of experience in nonprofit fundraising or development for non-profits based in the so-called “U.S.”
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Communications, Non-Profit Management, or a related field.
- Experience with major gifts, corporate partnerships, or capital campaigns.
- Experience with donor management platforms and CRM systems.
- Proven track record of successful donor cultivation and fundraising campaign management.
- Experience overseeing or collaborating with grant writers or development staff.
- Ability to work independently in a remote, cross-border environment.
- Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and respectful communication with Indigenous communities.
- Commitment to decolonial frameworks, narrative justice, and anti-oppressive practices.
- Clear communication skills and openness to feedback.
Preferred
- Multilingual abilities, including English plus Indigenous languages, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, or other languages.
- Experience in international fundraising and development
- Familiarity with Indigenous data sovereignty principles.
- Master’s Degree in related field preferred

Benefits
Flexible schedule and remote position to work where you’d like. Must have 55 hours of availability for $2,500 USD/month, consistent access to high-speed internet and the ability to communicate across time zones.
Level of Language Proficiency
Fluent in English. Proficiency in Indigenous languages, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, or other languages a plus .

Remote.
