SUBMISSIONS
Thank you for your interest in contributing to The Magazine. We particularly encourage content creators from underrepresented groups, including people with disabilities, advocates for women’s rights, individuals from Afro-indigenous communities, and members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, to pitch to us.
We welcome pitches and submissions from Indigenous writers, journalists, photographers, filmmakers, creatives, academics, storytellers, and experts who are passionate about amplifying Indigenous voices and experiences.
Through in-depth reporting, analysis, and storytelling, we strive to contribute to a world that values and honors Indigeneity, fostering understanding, empathy, and positive change.
Before submitting your pitch, please review the following guidelines to ensure that your proposal aligns with our editorial focus and standards:
EDITORIAL FOCUS
- The Magazine aims to provide in-depth analysis, insightful commentary, and engaging narratives that seek to inform, empower, and advocate for Indigenous community members while creating professional opportunities for Native media workers and storytellers.
- We are interested in original, well-researched, and thought-provoking content that explores diverse perspectives, amplifies underreported voices, and challenges dominant narratives.
- Topics may include but are not limited to:
Historical legacies of colonialism and their impact on Indigenous communities, culture, and sovereignty.
-Indigenous resistance and activism in reclaiming autonomy, rights, and cultural heritage amidst ongoing colonial influences.
Case studies highlighting successful Indigenous-led initiatives in areas such as cultural revitalization, community empowerment, and self-determination.
Policy analysis, advocacy initiatives, and grassroots movements addressing systemic injustices and advocating for Indigenous rights, sovereignty, and self-governance.
Pitch Guidelines
- Please submit a concise pitch outlining the proposed story lead (no more than 300 words), two short paragraphs with further details, key arguments or themes to be explored, and potential sources or interviews.
- Highlight why your proposed topic is timely, relevant, and aligned with the editorial mission of The Magazine.
- Avoid pitching topics, and pitch stories. Be as specific as you can and tell us about the characters and narrative you want to pursue.
- If applicable, provide relevant background information, research findings, or personal experiences that inform your pitch.
- Include links to any previously published work, writing samples, or relevant credentials that demonstrate your expertise on the subject matter.
Submission Process
- All pitches and submissions should be sent to info@crushingcolonialism.org with the subject line “Pitch: [Your Proposed Headline for your Story].”
- In the body of the email, please include a brief bio introducing yourself, your areas of expertise, your tribal affiliation, and any other relevant affiliations or publications.
- Attach your pitch as a Word document or PDF file. Please do not send pitches within the body of the email.
- We strive to respond to all pitches but we may be unable to provide individual feedback on every proposal.
Editorial Standards
- We adhere to high editorial standards of accuracy, fairness, and integrity. All submissions must be thoroughly fact-checked and supported by credible sources.
- Plagiarism or any form of intellectual dishonesty will not be tolerated. Please ensure that all content is original and properly attributed.
- We encourage diverse perspectives and respectful dialogue but reserve the right to edit or reject submissions that contain hate speech, discriminatory language, or misinformation.
Compensation
- The Magazine compensates writers, photographers, and videographers for published content based on negotiated rates and terms.
- We are committed to fair compensation practices and value the contributions of our contributors.
